Running my own AS
Running my own AS
Disclaimer
- dont do this just to do it (if everyone does this, the internet probably falls apart)
- you can get v6 space fomr some people if you just need addresses
What is it?

Experience and Learnings
Questions I had upfront
How long does it take?
What does it cost?
- many different configurations
- dont need ASN
- dont need PI (can use PA, which is often included or really cheap)
- ASN + PI: ~180€ per year (for me…)
- routers
- probably want a domain
- transit?
- maybe even datacenter and/or
Dual Stack?
No.
I mean, I would love to have some IPv4 Space, but since we ran out of available addresses and buying address space starts at roughly 10k, no. Some single rented address from a hoster must be good enough for now.
What accounts do I need?
- PeeringDB
- BGP.tools useful, but not required
Links to read all about this
- ken finnegan
- bgp.tools rumschauen
Last but not least, you can get a lot of inspiration form looking at bgp.tools and PeeringDB entries.
Open TODOs
Well, where do I start and where do I end? Running your own AS with your own IP space opens a lot of possibilities
- Second Router
- Monitoring
- Maybe better upstreams with shorter latency
- RPKI
- Automatic collection of router configs
- DNS Servers (authoritative and resolvers)
Maybe in the far future:
- Peering
- Physical router
